A Coventry primary school is hoping to win £5,000 to transform its outdoor plot into a glorious community vegetable growing gardenGrange Farm Primary School in Styvechale, is one of 10 UK schools shortlisted for Higgidy’s Seeds of Joy competition judged by TV Horticulturalist, Frances Tophill.
And on January 25 three winners will be chosen to receive the substantial sum towards the cost of their community veg garden journey.
Frances, a presenter on BBC’s Gardeners’ World, who is leading the search to find the three prize-winning plots, said: “Through this competition I hope to inspire people to pick up a spade and celebrate the glory of vegetables. I’m really excited to work with the three winning teams to help them bring their vision to life in how they want their community garden to look.”
She will offer each winner her expert advice and support them in how to best use the money to turn their nominated patch into a vibrant veg garden.
Grange Farm Primary School is looking to create a Community Growing Garden in their school grounds. With more than 400 students from diverse family backgrounds, they hope that the growing garden will help bring their school community together and act as a space for learning, friendship and cultivation.
Not only will the space be used for teaching but it will be open for families and neighbours to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors too.
The nationwide initiative was launched following research revealing that 10% of families would grow their own veg if a community garden was involved. It aims to get the UK enjoying veg more than ever before by growing their own vegetables, and adding a touch of positivity to the planet at the same time.
Camilla Stephens, Co-Founder of Higgidy, said: “Over a third of people in this country have started growing their own vegetables at home since the beginning of the lockdown last year. It really feels like now is the time to celebrate the glory of veg, so make sure you get voting for your local space to win!”
The 10 shortlisted projects range from schools and churches, to community groups and refuges across the UK. Votes are open now so to support Grange Farm Primary School go to
