A new allotment for the blind and partially sighted has attracted huge local support after its launch in Earlsdon.

Materials, manpower and money were all donated by local companies to the Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind (CRCB) in order to support the new organic allotment at the Beechwood Allotment Site.

The fully accessible allotment features five large raised beds with wide, wheelchair-friendly paths, a shed, greenhouse and a covered work area where light levels can be managed.

The barbeque launch was attended by Coventry City Council ’s cabinet member for public services, Coun Rachel Lancaster, who also arranged for recycled Tarmac plannings to be used for the paths.

Volunteers from Jaguar Land Rover’s Instrumentation Services Group based in Whitley , took teams of 16 to 20 people to work on the site over four days to clear it and build the beds along with the other structures.

Generous donations of materials were received from Builders Supply in Spon End , Bates Timber in Foleshill and Neil Bartlett Haulage’s Aggregates4U business in Binley .

As well as providing several hours of voluntary labour, Coventry & District Charitable Trust also showed its support by donating a grant to buy the shed, greenhouse and tools.

CRCB trustee Hugh Sorrill, said: “We are deeply touched by the huge amount of support we have received. A staggering amount of work by a large number of people has gone into this allotment.”

It's nice to see local businesses supporting a worthy cause.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
