A recruitment drive has been launched in Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire to discover home composting champions.

Waste chiefs in the county are recruiting a task force of volunteer 'master composters' to spread the good news about home composting.

Warwickshire's Waste Partnership is looking for volunteers aged 18 and over to talk to school and community groups about the benefits of home composting as well as helping residents in their neighbourhood to get up and running with the process.

The 'composting champions' will also exhibit at some of the county's fetes, village fairs and summer shows during their 30 hours a year commitment.

Waste projects officer, Caroline Faulkner said: "We provide full training and support – including a one-day induction course at Garden Organic's Ryton Gardens.

"Some of our volunteers are seasoned gardeners while others are passionate environmentalists – keen to leave a legacy for their children and their children's children."

Composting at home is a natural way of recycling garden and kitchen waste, with the resulting compost an excellent soil conditioner for the garden, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to peat.

Anyone can compost at home as people don't need to be a keen gardener or have a big garden to do it. The simplest form of compost can be made from kitchen scraps and the practice can cut household waste by a third.

Training for the next cohort of master composters is scheduled for March and places are limited.

For further details contact Caroline Faulkner by emailing composters@warwickshire.gov.uk, visiting http://www.warwickshire/composting or by calling on 01926 418 088. Compost bins are available to Warwickshire residents priced £9.99 each plus £5.49 delivery. To order a bin visit http://www.wcc.getcomposting.com or phone 0844 571 4444.
