A green-fingered Coventry gardener is eagerly waiting to see if his monstrous tomato plant is a confirmed world record breaker.Surjit Kainth with Mick Poultney, from Guinness records, and Coun Linda BighamSurjit Kainth planted a single seed earlier this year in his garden in Foxford Crescent, Longford, and has watched with astonishment as it has outgrown its humble pot and sprouted a never-ending supply of tomatoes.
After the Telegraph printed pictures of Surjit’s pride and joy, his daughter Kiran convinced him to contact the Guinness World Records – believing it could easily beat the current record of 488 from a single plant, held by Graham Tranter from Shropshire.
Now an official world record count has taken place in Surjit’s Coventry garden – watched over by Mick Poultney, chairman of the Midlands branch of the National Vegetable Society – revealing the plant had a whopping 1,355 tomatoes.
The official count was filmed and the recording and all the documents will be sent off to the Guinness World Records offices to be authenticated, with a final decision expected in about six weeks.
Surjit was joined by his family, neighbours and Longford councillor Linda Bigham for the occasion and said: “It’s been a great pleasure to invite all these people here, including the dignitaries who have given their precious time.”
