People can help themselves to herbs and fruit after they’ve popped into a public lavatory for a call of nature.

A mini allotment is taking shape at the back of the lavatories on Regent Grove, near Leamington Town Hall, with the aim of encouraging all passers-by to help themselves.

Volunteers with the Brom-ford Hub, which supports adults with learning difficulties, have been getting their hands dirty cultivating the patch of land which will have radishes, chives, garlic, mint, strawberries, gooseberries and rhubarb – but no flowers.

Bromford’s Leamington hub is based in the town hall and members are also creating a herb garden, which will be transferred to the patch, donated by Leamington Town Council.

Isobel Gardner, who uses Bromford’s drop-in services, said: “It’s great because we get to see things grow and give back to the community at the same time. I can always taste the difference between fresh food you’ve grown yourself and food bought at the shops.”

Derrick Knight started the sustainable living concept in Leamington and contacted the Bromford Hub to help drum up support for the project. Those interested in getting involved meet on Tuesdays at 10am by the Delicious by FT cafe in Regent Court.
