Would-be gardeners are being offered the chance to get cultivating, save cash and boost their health and fitness levels all at the same time.

A number of allotments are available to rent in Nuneaton.

Despite the demise of the Stockingford AA Institute Club, known locally as ‘the Cabbage’ in Stockingford, its Allotment Association is still growing strong and looking for new blood.

Now is the time for people in the area considering growing their own, due to health reasons, the rising costs of buying fruit and vegetables or simply to get more active, to find out more.

As well as the produce, successful applicants will benefit from expert knowledge from long standing members, several get togethers and plenty of community spirit.

“As prices of fruit and vegetables are set to soar this year, now is the perfect time to consider taking on an allotment and growing your own,” said a spokesperson for the association.

“Fresh air, exercise and the satisfaction of your own organic produce are all real health benefits.”

The site stretches from Church Road, behind the old Cabbage, to the Pavilion Club in Ansley Road.

“There are various sizes of allotment with small starter plots for novice growers and the added bonus of several standpipes for water during dry spells,” added the spokesperson.

“Also on site is ‘The Shed’, which is open for a few hours each weekend from spring through until winter.

“Here you can buy many essentials for your allotment, including fertiliser, compost, bonemeal and seeds.

“There are always several old hands around with years of experience ready to give you advice on any questions you may have.

“The allotments have a great community spirit, and everyone helps each other by swapping plants, keeping an eye on neighbour’s plots during holidays and helping to keep paths and hedges trimmed.

“The association has several get-togethers during the year, including barbecues and quizzes, as well as meetings at the Stockingford Pavilion.”

Anyone interested in having a plot can either contact secretary Paul Burton on 024 7638 8255 or visit ‘The Shed’ through the Church Road entrance to the allotments, between 11am and 12noon any Saturday or Sunday for more information.

Demolition work started back in July of last year on The Cabbage.

Residents had battled to save the club from closure, but the popular venue for weddings and other family get togethers stopped taking bookings sounding the death knell for the club.

The site was bought by the Ingleby Foundation to build ‘supported living’ accommodation for adults with learning difficulties.

The Cabbage’s sister club the Stockingford Allotments Association Club, more familiarly known as the Pavilion, is still trading as normal.
