A group of green-fingered Earlsdon folk have stepped up their efforts to make sure a local park is in good shape for the spring.

The Friends of Spencer Park have been hard at work ensuring the Spencer Avenue green space is looking good – with three dedicated members braving the howling winds this week.

They helped spruce up planters on the outskirts of the park by adding compost.

Committee member Karen Berry said: “We go every month.

“In the summer we had 20 or 30 people helping out on Saturday mornings, but understandably the numbers tend to tail off in the winter.

“It’s all part of efforts to get the park looking its best.

“We’re applying for funding so hopefully in the future we will have some children’s play equipment and maybe some outdoor gym equipment too.

“Last summer we planted 6,000 crocus bulbs. They’ve been supplemented by snowdrops and grape hyacinths.

“It’s certainly going to look different when spring arrives – a lot more colourful.”
