Posted: Mon May 23, 2011 5:24 pmThe name comes from the Ford Zephyr and Ford Zodiac, which were the only patrol cars at the time big enough to carry the batteries needed for a radio transmitter. Earlier police cars carried only a radio receiver except for the custom-built V8s used by the Flying Squad of Scotland Yard. The theme tune was a #5 chart hit for Johnny Keating and his Orchestra in April 1962.
