I'd have thought they'd have carpeted it in foam since it's full of high octane petrol?

That certainly used to be the way. Maybe there wasn't time, or they didn't have the capabilities? I know that a Gannet got into trouble at Bitteswell and was foam carpeted.

And the Gannet uses jet fuel which is less flammable than petrol!
