Having previously topped the chart at Christmas, Activision's first-person shooter will be the first number one of 2015 thanks to a 20 per cent increase in weekly sales.

A 33 per cent sales spike sees GTA 5 climb to second, above FIFA 15 in third.

FIFA 15's position in third place means that for the first time since 2009, EA's footballing franchise doesn't occupy a top-two spot at the start of a year.

Elsewhere, an Ubisoft triple-bill of Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Crew occupy four, five and six, above Driveclub in seventh and Minecraft at eight.

At the tail-end of the chart, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection re-enter at 18 and 19, respectively.

The top 20 in full:
1. (1) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Activision)
