Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has received a new update preventing PC users from installing third-party patches.

According to CVG, the latest update stops the PC version from running without Steam.

It also prevents users from accessing and modifying the executable file, eliminating the ability to access a third-party patch, which previously enabled users to run the game using more than 2GB of RAM.

Using the patch and taking advantage of the additional RAM resulted in a smoother looking game running at a higher frame-rate.

It was recently announced that Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sold 3.5 million copies in its opening 24 hours of sale.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
