Bioware's sci-fi RPG pipped Super Mario Galaxy 2, FIFA 11, LIMBO, Heavy Rain and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood to the prize, which was presented to an Electronic Arts representative by The Gadget Show's Jason Bradbury.

Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain picked up the most awards of the night, winning prizes for 'Story', 'Technical Innovation' and 'Original Music'. Call Of Duty: Black Ops was presented with the public-voted 'GAME Award of 2010', but failed to win the 'Multiplayer' gong, which went to Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood kicked off the show by scooping the prize for 'Action', but lost out to Super Mario Galaxy 2 in the 'Gameplay' category.

Elsewhere, puzzle game Cut The Rope became the first iPhone game to win an award in the 'Handheld' category, while F1 2010 won best 'Sports' game and Civilization V was dubbed the finest 'Strategy' title.

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Dara O'Briain and was attended by numerous celebrities including Sir Ben Kingsley, who presented the 'BAFTA Fellowship' to Peter Molyneux.
