A host of legacy system emulators have been removed from the Android Marketplace in what is thought to be a clampdown.

Nesoid, Snesoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Ataroid, Gearoid and Gameboid have all vanished from the storefront, according to Engadget.

Creator Yong Zhang has since revealed that his developer account has been suspended without notice. Other developers have turned to unofficial Android stores to honour customers' purchases.

Earlier this year, platform holder Google pulled a popular PSOne emulator from the platform followed by several Sega emulators.

Emulators enable users to run software from other platforms on their mobile device. Most of these programmes are unofficial and therefore illegal to distribute.

Earlier this month, it was reported that sales of Android-supported devices surpassed their iOS counterparts during Q1 2011.
