Godiva Festival cancelled as advice warns Covid-19 pandemic could last into summer

It wasn't thought the number of workers needed to get it running was achievable - let alone the crowds of people

Godiva Festival has been cancelled this year as a result of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Coventry City Council, who organise the event - which was once the UK’s biggest free music festival - confirmed the 2020 edition will not be going ahead.

They said that their decision came as a result of Government and Public Health advice.

In a statement, the council went on to say that they “acted to protect the public and to ensure that emergency services’ personnel and key workers are able to concentrate their services where they are most needed”.

What’s more, with guidelines in place to ensure social distancing, the number of workers and preparation needed in the days and weeks before the festival itself was not thought to be achievable - before even considering having thousands of music fans in the crowd in close proximity to each other.

The cancellation follows similar steps by the organisers of national events such as Glastonbury and those close to home including Coventry Pride and Kenilworth Show.

Current advice from Public Health England is that the COVID-19 pandemic could last for a prolonged period and into the summer when the festival was set to be held.

This year’s event was set to take place from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5.

No acts had been announced at the time of cancellation - but big names such as Busted, Feeder, and Frank Iero have been booked to appear at the War Memorial Park event in recent years.
