Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem will be performed at Coventry Cathedral in a remembrance ceremony – the very place it was first played in 1962

Britten is considered one of the great composers of the 20th century.

After his death in 1976, he left behind a legacy of 16 operas, a full-length ballet, 15 song-cycles, more than 60 folk songs and nearly 80 works for film, radio, and theatre.

It was Britten who marked the consecration of the New Cathedral in 1962 by performing his pacifist anthem, the War Requiem, for the very first time.

Coventry and its famous medieval quarter had to be reconstructed after the Blitz bombings during the Second World War.

The city and the cathedral became recognised symbols of peace and reconciliation after they rose from the ashes of the conflict.

On November 14, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be joined by Coventry Cathedral Chorus, Brighton Festival Chorus and Coventry Cathedral Choristers to perform this great work.

It will be conducted by Kerry Beaumont, Simon Over, and Paul Leddington Wright.
