After leading the charts only a day after its May 10 release, the alternative rock band, fronted by Tom Chaplin, held off fierce competition from Plan B and Lady GaGa.

While The Defamation Of Strickland Banks showed no signs of waning in second place, GaGa's new compilation LP The Remix slotted in at a respectable third, seeming also to boost the position of The Fame Monster, which climbed one place to number four.

The National's fifth studio album High Violet reached number five, beating AC/DC and Diana Vickers, who slipped to sixth and seventh spot respectively.

Foals debuted at number eight with Total Life Forever, the indie band's follow up to 2008's Antidotes.

Florence and the Machine and Black Eyed Peas both managed to keep hold of top ten positions, as opposed to Justin Bieber's My Worlds which slid to 11, down four from last week.

The top ten albums in full:
1. (-) Keane: 'Night Train

3. (-) Lady GaGa: 'The Remix'
