From Sunday February 28 it’s all about the bass at the Coventry Music Museum with a focus on Specials bassist Horace Panter.

The new temporary exhibition called On Bass-Sir Horace Gentleman - inspired by the phrase used by fellow band member Terry Hall - looks at Horace’s career from the show band days of Breaker, Uptown Ska, Blues To Go and of course The Specials.

Horace said: “There’s history of 40 years of music. Everything from battered suitcases, well-worn musical instruments and long-forgotten side projects. I never knew I was so interesting!”

There will of course be plenty of bass guitars on display and a chance for visitors to have a go at playing one and local bass legends are due to take part in our special ‘Sounding Offs’. So far Horace, Style Council and Specials second bass player Anthony Harty and King Bassman Tony Wall have all agreed to take part.

The Specials have announced an 18-date autumn tour and local fans can now get tickets to the Leicester De Montfort Hall performance on November 3 and Wolverhampton Civic Hall on November 4.

The announcement of a tour kicked up a storm on social media, with many asking who will be replacing the recently departed John Bradbury on drums and why there won’t be a Coventry gig. Hopefully these questions will be answered in the coming days and weeks.

Lead guitarist of The Specials, Roddy Radiation Byers, will be a guest of Neville Staple at his gig at The Empire on Saturday March 5. The two former members of The Specials will reuinte on stage with support from bands Barb’d Wire and The Strike. Tickets have been selling well at the 2-Tone Village, so March 5 is a definite date for the diary.
