The single, which was arranged by Simon Cowell, features 21 artists including Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle. It recorded the biggest-first week sales of any single since 2000.

The money raised from sales of the track will be split between The Sun's Helping Haiti campaign and the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Elsewhere in the chart, the Glee cast occupied two spots in the top ten with 'Don't Stop Believin' at number five and 'Halo/Walking On Sunshine' at number nine. Glee also took number 14 with 'It's My Life/Confessions Part II', while their rendition of 'Somebody To Love' charted at number 33.

Rihanna broke into the top ten with 'Rude Boy', while Alicia Keys climbed one place with 'Empire State Of Mind (Part II)' to reach number five.

However, Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin' slipped out of the top ten, dropping two places to number 11. Meanwhile, Jedward, who were last week's number two, fell ten places to number 12 with 'Ice Ice Baby (Under Pressure)'.
