The 32-year-old celebrated his third chart-topper ten years to the month since he first auditioned for the inaugural series of Pop Idol, the show that launched his music career upon his victory the following February.

Fellow TV talent contest veteran Joe McElderry finishes as this week's runner-up with his Classic album, inspired by his Popstar To Operastar victory back in July. The X Factor champion previously achieved a peak of three with his debut album Wide Awake last October.

Adele's 21, meanwhile, falls to three, marking the first time that the London-born singer's LP has finished outside of the top two in 31 weeks of release.

A new entry from Wretch 32 entitled Black And White and Adele's debut record 19 complete the top five, while outgoing number one Welcome Reality by Nero slips down to eight, sandwiched between new entries in the shape of What Matters Most by Barbra Streisand and Hard-Fi's Killer Sounds.

Rihanna climbs one place to collect the final spot in the Top 10 with Loud, while Jay-Z & Kanye West, Chase & Status and John Denver crash out of the top sellers, as their respective titles Watch The Throne, No More Idols and The Ultimate Collection drop eight, four and eight respectively to 12, 13 and 15.

Sat between them at 14 is The Red Album, a new entry from US rapper Game, while the back end of the chart sees Beyoncé's 4 plummet ten positions to 18 as Plan B's The Defamation Of Strickland Banks climbs to 19 from 25 in its 72nd week of release.
