Wonderland have played big stadiums and even bigger festivals, but a humble school hall in Coventry yesterday became THE place to see the band hotly tipped to be the new Girls Aloud.

Hundreds of screaming young fans clapped, cheered and sang along as Wonderland played a gig at Blue Coat School, in Terry Road, Stoke yesterday.

The five-piece girl band sang three live songs to promote their new album and EP, and took questions from the audience at the end.

Speaking to the Telegraph afterwards, band member Leigh Learmont said: “It is daunting, especially at the start when you come out and the kids are quiet, but we always seem to get them going.

“It’s great when they get up on their feet and start clapping, and especially when they know the words.”

The singers were put together by X Factor judge Louis Walsh and Westlife star Kian Egan following auditions in Ireland in 2008.

Unlike the X Factor, the girls have carefully avoided the limelight in an effort to build their profile and relationship over time.

But the big promotional push is now kicking in ahead of the summer release of their debut album and tomorrow’s release of their first EP.

Leigh said: “Different things work for different people, but doing things slowly has given us time to grow.
