Singer Chris Rea, known for hits including Driving Home for Christmas, has died aged 74, a spokesperson for his family says

As well as his much-loved festive hit, Rea had success in the late Seventies and Eighties with Fool (If You Think It's Over), Let's Dance and The Road To Hell

"He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family," a statement from his wife and two children says

Rea was born in Middlesbrough to an Italian father and Irish mother - his family were in the ice cream business, and Rea even took his driving test in his dad's ice cream van
