The 18-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of The X Factor in 2008, knocks Usher off number one with her debut single 'Once'.

Speaking on Radio 1, the star said: "I'm just happy, but I was so nervous. I'm beaming and I'm excited, thank you all so much."

Elsewhere in the chart, fellow new entry Chipmunk has to settle for third place with 'Until You Were Gone', which follows three other top ten tracks from his 2009 album I Am Chipmunk.

Scouting For Girls fall three places to take number five with 'This Ain't A Love Song', losing out to Plan B's 'She Said', which holds onto its fourth spot. Timbaland also remains solid in eighth place with 'Carry Out'.

Meanwhile, Professor Green and Kelis move down to six and seven respectively, and Selena Gomez & the Scene descend three places from last week.

Tina Turner's 1989 hit 'The Best' makes a bizarre reappearance in the top ten, following a campaign from Rangers FC fans ahead of their SPL title challenge.

Lady GaGa's 'Telephone' moves from number six to 11th spot, while the Glee cast make another new entry at 12.
