The Fulham-based singer's third studio LP landed at the peak of the rankings just one week after he topped the singles chart for a second time with 'Stay Awake'.

"When I started in this industry all I ever wanted was a No.1 album," he wrote on Twitter. "Today I can be proud. Thank you all so much for your support."

Finishing in second and third place this Sunday are Adele's mammoth 21 record and Joe McElderry's Classic, both of which vault two up the chart after swapping places with Nothing But The Beat by David Guetta and Will Young's Echoes.

Music icons The Beatles return to the listings at six with a re-release of their eight-times platinum compilation album 1, while last week's chart-toppers Red Hot Chili Peppers sink to seven.

Meanwhile, 87-year-old Hollywood legend Doris Day becomes the oldest artist ever to reach the UK album chart Top 10 with an original recording, as My Heart makes its grand arrival at nine.

Day released her debut solo album You're My Thrill in 1949 and first hit the charts as a vocalist in 1945.

Elsewhere, Back To Black by the late Amy Winehouse slips out of the Top 10 for the first time since her death on July 23 after falling one spot to 11, finishing ahead of new entries in the shape of John Barrowman's best-of collection Tonight's The Night and Chris Rea's Santo Spirito Blues.

Dolly Parton falls six to 15 with Better Day to end up sandwiched between Lady GaGa and Jessie J, who are up six apiece to 14 and 16 respectively with Born This Way and Who You Are.

The remaining places in the top 20 are all occupied by fallers, with the biggest losses belonging to A Different Kind Of Fix by Bombay Bicycle Club, down 11 spots to 17, and Wretch 32's sophomore album Black And White, which is at 18 from last week's 11.

However, Mercury Prize winner PJ Harvey bucks the trend, as Let England Shake rockets back up the chart from last week's 181 to 24 after her victory on Tuesday evening.
