Jamie Woon, whose next-big-thing credentials face a crucial test when debut album Mirrorwriting is released in April, he will be showcasing that material at Coventry’s Kasbah next Saturday.

The singer-songwriter first made a mark with his Wayfaring Stranger EP in 2007, but it was last year’s Night Air single that really took off and earned him a lofty position in the BBC’s influential Sound Of 2011 poll.

His sound is an intriguing mixture of (relatively) ancient and modern influences, generally pushed into the R&B pigeon-hole.

“I love atmosphere,” he explains obliquely.

“I’m a fan of really deep sub bass that isn’t swamped by other sounds. There’s always enough room for some twinkly stuff on top and this big cavern, for the voice.

“I like people who find different ways of doing the blues, which is at the root of all popular music. Blues and bass – that’s the real hybrid.”

Woon picked up some glowing reviews when he supported Amy Winehouse and now he is eager to broaden that acquired fanbase.

“I want to play to more people and I want to play in bigger places,” he said. “ I want to be able to do absolutely anything I want – no constraints.”

Tickets for next Saturday’s Kasbah show are £5.
