The 49-year-old Britain's Got Talent alumnus, whose previous album I Dreamed A Dream shifted over ten million copies and became the fastest-selling global debut record of all time, thanked her fans for their continued dedication.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me all this time," she declared. "My dreams just keep coming true."

Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company added: "It is a great achievement by Susan Boyle, who has now scored two official number one albums in the UK in less than 12 months - not bad for someone who was unknown outside of her home village little over 18 months ago."

Boyle's successful return results in James Blunt just missing out on his third UK number one album, as Some King Of Trouble arrives at four behind chart high-fliers Bon Jovi and Cheryl Cole.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry's former chart-topping effort Teenage Dream returns to the top ten after climbing three places to nine, while Cee Lo Green scores the second-highest new entry of the week with The Lady Killer at ten.

Further down the chart, See My Friends by Ray Davis is another high-placing new entry at 12, while Men In Scarlett by The Chelsea Pensioners, a group of residents at the Royal Hospital with a combined age of 550 years, make their debut at 14.

Behind them is Neil Diamond's Dreams, which tumbles ten places to 18, Elvis Presley compilation album Viva Elvis, which lands at 19, and Jay-Z's Hits Collection at 20.

The top ten in full:
1. (-) Susan Boyle: 'The Gift'
2. (2) Bon Jovi: 'Greatest Hits'
3. (1) Cheryl Cole: 'Messy Little Raindrops'
4. (-) James Blunt: 'Some Kind Of Trouble'
