Panto for a pound features modern take on old tale

Unique Lovex plays Cinderballer, a young woman who faces hurdles on her way to becoming a professional footballer



A pantomime about a young woman who wants to play football rather than go to the ball can be watched for just £1.

Cinderballer, a sporting take on the festive favourite Cinderella, is being staged by a Coventry youth charity set up to tackle gang violence.

Semi-professional footballers from Rugby Borough Women's FC are also taking part.

Tyler Campbell, founder of Fridays, said the affordable price would ensure anyone affected by the cost-of-living crisis could go.

Voluntary cast members play characters including national team coach Sarina Wiegman and England star Marcus Rashford.

Coventry-born singer-songwriter and actress Unique Lovex said the play challenged sexist stereotypes about girls and women "not being allowed to play football".

"I’m always giving back to the community and everyone else is, who’s in the play. So that’s why we’re doing it really and to make others laugh," Ms Lovex added.

Angelina Nixon and Katy Morris from Rugby Borough Women's FC said being involved allowed them to highlight growing opportunities in the women's game.

“Obviously the story resonates with us, playing the sport, being women in football. So it means a lot," Ms Morris added.

Even the set was created for free, by local street artist Michael Batchelor, and organisers hoped to provide free food and transport for those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis.

"We know theatre can be expensive and obviously because of the cost-of-living crisis we’re going to be putting this on for £1," said Mr Campbell.

With Fridays' choir members also performing, the charity's founder said the show also provided "positive opportunities" for local youngsters.

Cinderballer runs from 4-9 December at Central Methodist Hall, with details on Fridays' social media accounts, external.
