Adam Woodyatt as Eastenders' Ian Beale is perhaps one of the country's most recognisable TV faces.

But the star has some real acting chops he put on display at the Belgrade Theatre this week in a thriller called Looking Good Dead.

Opposite another familiar face, Laurie Brett, who played Ian's long-suffering wife Jane on the BBC soap, the pair lock horns once more - this time in Coventry.

Looking Good Dead is about Woodyatt's character Tom Bryce who inadvertently becomes a witness to a vicious murder hours after picking up an abandoned USB stick on a train.

His family are thrown into chaos as a result, as the play rips through its two-hour running time in the blink of an eye.

Woodyatt is on good form as a 'down on his luck' character who you struggle to feel any real sympathy for despite his circumstances.

Brett is great as the high-maintenance, middle class wife who it appears is the reason behind Woodyatt's character's successes and failings.

With more twists and turns then Formula 1 race track, Looking Good Dead keeps audiences gripped - with Woodyatt and Brett at the forefront, there are several times you expect to hear the well-known drum beat which signals the often dramatic end of all Eastenders episodes.

Another highlight is the chemistry and warm banter between Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and his leading police officers who are trying to help the Bryces, despite the fact they are often dealing with dark and bloody scenarios - their dad-type humour often bringing slight comical relief to some grizzly topics.

But the biggest laugh of the night came when Woodyatt's character laments his son spending a gap year in South America as "all I got was a week in Coventry".
