£600,000 is to be spent on creating a new venue for the Belgrade

A new lease has been agreed to transform the vacant former Jaguar Pub in Coventry into a ‘groundbreaking’ new space for the Belgrade Theatre.

Developers Complex Development Projects (CDP) were given approval in March to turn 49-51 Corporation Street, which incorporates the pub, into a ground-floor cafe and apartments.

As part of the approval, the old pub site will be turned into a new space for the neighbouring Belgrade Theatre to provide a workshop, performance and conference area.

Around £600,000 is to be spent on the Belgrade project, concluding phase three of the theatre’s £5m redevelopment programme, which has already seen the refurbishment of the auditorium and a new cafe/restaurant.

An existing lease on the Jaguar Pub site is held by developers CDP but a deal has been struck with the council to grant a new 150-year lease to the Belgrade Theatre Trust to enable the scheme to go ahead.

The council will forgo a £129,885 lease extension premium but that will be repaid by the theatre over a period of around 20 years, giving back circa £8,000 to the council from annual grant funding once the site is open.

Speaking at a meeting on Thursday, July 15, where the lease was approved, cabinet member for jobs and regeneration Cllr Jim O’Boyle said: “This to me is really straightforward.

“It means a property that is currently lying vacant and has done for a number of years will come back into use in the interests of the Belgrade and the wider community.

“There is no cost in the end to the local authority and the benefits to the wider community and the economy are self-evident.”

The new space for the Belgrade will be named ‘The Jag’.

CDP has done very well out of the regeneration of Coventry. - Just sayin' like!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
