A musical stage adaptation of Room on the Broom whizzes into Coventry this July for a magical run at the Belgrade Theatre to kick start the summer holidays.

Families across Coventry and Warwickshire are invited to join the Witch and her cat on a broomstick adventure, based on the much-loved picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler; the pair behind the modern classic The Gruffalo.

The Witch and her cat are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitch-hikers - a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and a crazy frog.

But this broomstick’s not meant for five and - CRACK - it snaps in two... just as the hungry dragon appears!

This Olivier Award nominated show has toured to theatres across the UK and beyond, entertaining children 3 and up, with original songs, colourful characters and animal puppets.

Julia Donaldson is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors and was the 2011-2013 Children’s Laureate.

In addition to The Gruffalo, Donaldson has also penned Stick Man, The Snail and the Whale, Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book, Superworm, Tabby McTat and many more.

Axel Scheffler is the award-winning illustrator of The Gruffalo and other best-selling books by Julia Donaldson.

The cast includes Amy Harris as the Witch who has performed in previous children’s shows with Red Balloon Theatre Company and Saltmine Theatre Company.

She is joined by Emma Crowley-Bennett, a graduate of East 15 Acting School, as the Cat and David Garrud, who has performed in numerous productions for Tall Stories, as the Dog and the Frog. Completing the cast is Connor Bloom as the Bird and the Dragon.

The production is brought to the stage by children’s theatre company Tall Stories, who have toured productions of family favourites such as The Snow Dragon, Owl and the Pussycat, The Gruffalo and The Snail and the Whale, and in 2017 celebrate their 20th birthday.

In 2012, Room on the Broom was adapted into an animated film narrated by Simon Pegg and starring Gillian Anderson, Rob Brydon, Martin Clunes, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and David Walliams. The film was nominated for the Best Animated Short Film at the 2014 Academy Awards.

Room on the Broom runs on the Main Stage at the Belgrade Theatre from Mon 24 to Sat 26 July. Tickets are available now priced at £14.50 for adults, £12.50 for children and £45 for families.
