A group of theatre students with nearly a million pounds worth of debt between them are turning their financial woes into a musical.

There are 27 Coventry University students working with Birmingham theatre company KILN on a musical called This is Sub Prime or How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Let the Taxpayer Pick up my Student Debt.

The musical tells the story of Kevin, a talented mathematician from a working class family. On a whim at a university open day he swaps his degree choice from maths to theatre. When the course finishes he has to face up to a degree which doesn’t qualify him for a particular job and a large debt.

His course isn’t even ideal for being an actor because most aspiring actors go to specialist drama schools.

A Coventry University spokesman said: “The piece they are developing is a provocative and satirical slant on the challenges facing young artists in Britain today but the reality for our students is that their career prospects are actually very good.”

Graduates don’t have to pay back their loans until they are earning at least £21,000. Last year ministers estimated 45 per cent of graduates will never repay.

Performances are on Wednesday- Friday, November 4-6, at 7.30pm with a 3.30pm matinee on Friday - all at the university’s Ellen Terry Building*.

Tickets are £5 and £3 concessions. Call 07340 408466.
