Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll have returned to Coventry with the Belgrade Theatre's latest production.

A musical inspired by the life of T Rex's Marc Bolan is the inspiration behind 20th Century Boy at the city centre venue.

It follows Rolan Bolan - played by the excellent Craig Storrod - looking to find out about his father and coming over from the USA to talk to his grandmother and other family members and friends about what happened in the 1960s and 70s with his dad.

The production was put together perfectly and Bolan's music is ideal for a musical production.

Being a fan of Bolan, I was a bit sceptical as to whether George Maguire could pull it off - but he's a top actor, he looked like him, sounded like him and almost sang like him which, considering Marc Bolan had a very unique voice was very impressive.

This play has something for everyone. It's a psycherdelic and colourful experience and an eductional one too. It's the best sort of history lesson in 70s glamrock you could ask for. It's funny, well written and after a tearful ending the actors took their well desired ovation.

Not that it ended there - they launched into all Bolan's best songs again, with everybody up and dancing.

It was almost like being transported back to the 1970s.

* 20th Century Boy is showing until Saturday, September 29. Visit belgrade.co.uk for more information.
