Freeman Dance show at Coventry's Belgrade Theatre

Thirty years of dancing feet are being celebrated in Coventry.



Around 300 young dancers will be taking to the stage at the Belgrade Theatre to mark the 30th anniversary of Freeman Dance.

The city group began in a Coventry scout hut in 1982 with just four pupils. They went on to give one of their first public performances just a year later at the Coventry Festival.

The group has grown over the years to become one of the largest and most successful dance schools in the country. They offer city youngsters the chance to try everything from ballet and street dancing to tap, Irish dancing, modern and acrobatics.

Teacher Jill Freeman said: “I cannot believe we’ve reached 30 years. The time has gone so fast. It’s quite a landmark date for us. The school has certainly come a long way – we’ve taught thousands of children to dance over the years and are now on our third generation of dancers with grandchildren of students from the 80s.”



The anniversary dance show is being held at the Belgrade today and tomorrow and features students aged from two to 19. The dance group is also popular with boys and more than 80 currently train at the school.

The city dancers have appeared at some of the UK’s most prestigious events and venues, including Clothes Show Live, Cadbury World, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. They also appeared in the auditions of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent last year.

Jill said: “The dance show features every single Freeman dancer. I am so proud of what the students have achieved.

“We have fantastic support from parents and really enthusiastic students with many of our graduates performing professionally all over the world.

“We’re hoping our anniversary shows will be sold out and we’re aiming to make it a night to remember.
