Classic drama with modern bite at the Belgrade theatre

In keeping with Belgrade artistic director Hamish Glen’s wish to make the Coventry theatre a recognised home for new versions of European classic drama, the latest offering is The Father.

Written by August Strindberg, who died 100 years ago, a re-working of the play was commissioned from Laurie Slade and will be directed by Joe Harmston who won acclaim for The Prodigals at last summer’s Edinburgh Festival.

The Father, which opens on the main stage on Saturday March 31 and runs until April 14, features a family in crisis as mother and father battle for control of their daughter’s future.

Joe said: “We are on a mission to bring a sharp, contemporary bite to this play, perfectly honouring Strindberg’s original.

“The Belgrade is the perfect first home for this ambitious project and we hope to continue the impressive recent history following on from Scenes from a Marriage, The House of Bernarda Alba, Uncle Vanya and Nora.”
