Courage in stark war drama at Belgrade theatre

A gripping First World War drama is coming to the Belgrade Theatre fresh from its West End run.



The Olivier-nominated and Tony and Drama Desk award-winning production of RC Sheriff’s Journey’s End, which originally opened at the Comedy Theatre in London in 2004, will be performed at the Coventry venue from Monday until Saturday October 29.

Based on the author’s own experience in the trenches, this tale about ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances celebrates humour and courage and explores the human spirit’s ability to triumph in the face of adversity.

Set in 1917 in St Quentin, the story focuses on 18 year-old 2nd Lieutenant Raleigh, the new arrival in the company, commanded by his former schoolboy friend, Captain Stanhope.

There’s only three years between them, but a lifetime of experience separates the pair as Raleigh discovers that the man in army greens is much changed from the boy he left behind in cricketing whites.

This production, directed by David Grindley, has also had runs at the Playhouse Theatre and the Duke of York’s and completed two tours around the UK.
