They might have bulging biceps and rippling six-packs but given the choice of the Chippendales or 83-year-old comic Ken Dodd there was only going to be one winner with the women of Bedworth.

The world famous male strippers were due to visit the town’s Civic Hall on March 5.

But it has been revealed the gig was cancelled shortly before the curtain was set to rise – and several sets of trousers were to fall – because of “lack of interest”.

In contrast Ken Dodd complete with his trademark tickling stick is set to attract a full house at the Civic Hall when he returns in May – his 40th year of Bedworth shows.

A spokesman for the Civic Hall said they did all they could to keep the gig on and the strippers’ clothes off.

“It just wouldn’t have been any fun if we had continued with it,” she said. “They are one of those acts where you need a good audience to get everyone going.

“The financial implications for us were considerable, but we just didn’t think it would work.

“We did all we could to try and market it and sell as many tickets as possible.

“Everyone who had already bought a ticket was been consulted and received a full refund.”

The gigs, that follow a sold-out stint at Edinburgh’s Fringe festival and an acclaimed 44-date UK tour, promise a non-stop party of live music, audience interaction, dancing and fantasy.
