A city theatre is reopening with a celebratory event after redevelopment work worth £3m was completed.

The Albany Theatre in Coventry has opened its doors after the construction of a new studio theatre and two education spaces, as well as a new café and bar area.

Starting as part of Coventry Technical College in 1935, the building survived the 1940 bombing of the city during World War Two.

The event, attended by city mayor Mal Mullton, is featuring performances from local community groups.

It has taken two years to carry out the work, which was funded through grants from the City of Culture capital fund and Coventry City Council’s cultural capital investment fund.

Kevin Shaw, CEO and artistic director, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our fantastic new spaces which will provide a whole new range of arts experiences for our communities.

"These new facilities will enable us to host a wider variety of events, workshops, and performances, ensuring there is something for everyone.

"We look forward to welcoming both new and returning patrons to explore and enjoy all that the Albany Theatre has to offer.”
