Thompson confirms Mulligan for 'My Fair Lady'

My Fair Lady screenwriter Emma Thompson has confirmed that Carey Mulligan will star as Eliza Doolittle in the upcoming musical remake.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live at the premiere of Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang, Thompson said that her An Education co-star is the favourite to land the part of the cockney flower girl turned high society lady.

"I think Carey is set to play [her], yes," Thompson said, adding that she doesn't yet know if Hugh Grant will accept the part of Professor Henry Higgins: "I love Hugh so I'd love him to do it, he might want to, he might not want to, so we don't know yet."

Mulligan last month denied involvement in My Fair Lady, telling DS that she hadn't been approached but "it would be lovely" to step into Audrey Hepburn's shoes for the role.
