Swansea fight back to claim Coventry draw



Swansea City came from behind to draw with Coventry City to leave Michael Duff still waiting for a first league win as the Welsh club's head coach.

Coventry were the more menacing side in the first half and went ahead thanks to Matty Godden's precise finish.

But Swansea responded inside two minutes as summer signing Jerry Yates' header looped inside the far post.

After a game of few clear-cut opportunities, Duff and opposite number Mark Robins could take some satisfaction having banked a point apiece.

But after draws in his first two home Championship fixtures, Duff - whose side go to Preston North End next - will be anxious to register a maiden league victory at Swansea.

This was a decent enough shift for Coventry, who are being tipped by many to contend for promotion once more this season despite the departures of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer, contributors of 33 goals between them in the last campaign.

Robins' side had given a glimpse of their potential with an impressive win over Middlesbrough last weekend and looked in confident mood as they went ahead in Wales.

Godden was involved in the build-up to the goal, sweeping the ball wide for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto to cross from the right.

Haji Wright, making his first league start since his club-record move to the Sky Blues, touched the ball into the path of Godden and he fired low into the far corner.

The goal was reward for Coventry's greater first-half threat, with Wright wasting a couple of half-chances.

The American international sliced badly wide from Milan van Ewijk's cross, then headed Josh Eccles' corner the wrong side of the post.

Swansea were looking like a team still readjusting to life under a new boss following Russell Martin's summer exit.

They had rarely threatened before Coventry struck, with a Harry Darling header from full debutant Charlie Patino's corner comfortably saved by Ben Wilson.

Yet the equaliser arrived within two minutes, as Darling's measured pass sent Harrison Ashby into space down the right and his cross was headed in at the near post by Yates.

The striker's second goal in three appearances since joining from Blackpool meant Swansea regained some momentum, though this was a contest in which neither side managed to mount any sustained pressure.

A classy piece of footwork from Joel Piroe - who was otherwise fairly quiet - led to a sight of goal for Fulton midway through the second half, but his driven effort flew straight into Wilson's arms.

Swansea looked more assured defensively for much of the second half, although there was a scare for the hosts when Kyle McFadzean found space at a corner only to head wastefully over the top.

There was little sign of a winner during seven minutes of stoppage time, with one long-range effort from Liam Kelly gathered by Carl Rushworth.

Coventry manager Mark Robins:

"We should have won but you can only win games if you defend properly. We didn't readjust quickly enough after we scored - the fact we conceded more or less straight away is really disappointing.

"I think we're going to be good but at the moment we're just working our way through.

"Everybody needs to be patient. We've got brilliant supporters and they understand.

"But we've got to pick up points while we're going, that's the key.

"When we've worked together a little bit longer I think you'll see a different side with more confidence, more fluidity and hopefully more goals and more chances."
