Sky Blues cruise to win at struggling Huddersfield

Viktor Gyokeres took his tally for the season to 18 as Coventry City boosted their play-off bid with a thumping win at lowly Huddersfield Town.

Gyokeres gave the away side the lead when he latched on to Michal Helik's woefully under-hit backpass and clipped home a composed finish.

The Terriers responded well to falling behind and Scott High forced a decent save from Ben Wilson in the Sky Blues goal but Gustavo Hamer doubled the visitors' advantage with a firm shot after a quality pass by Fankaty Dabo.

It was game over just four minutes later when Hamer won possession and played Sweden international Gyokeres in on goal and showed his class once more before sub Tyler Walker rounded off a great away day with a last-minute tap-in.

Mark Robins' men are now just two points off the top six after a run of four wins in five. However, things look bleak for Town, who have conceded eight goals in their past two games and are now seven points adrift of safety after Cardiff's win against Bristol City earlier on Saturday.

The game had been fairly even up until Poland international Helik's terribly miscued pass back after 31 minutes that left Gyokeres to race in on goal for his first of the day.

Neil Warnock admitted he was "crazy" to come out of retirement and take over at the John Smith's Stadium for a second time in February and the second-half showing from his charges will have done nothing to dissuade him from that viewpoint.

His side simply could not cope with the attacking verve of the visitors and were perhaps lucky it was not even worse, as Gyokeres saw an effort cleared off the line as he looked to complete a hat-trick.

Town now face Bristol City on Tuesday in desperate need of a win to boost their survival hopes, while Coventry will look to continue their fine run of form when they host Hull City on Saturday.

Coventry boss Mark Robins:

(On Gyokeres) "He's phenomenal and there's still loads of learning for him as a 24-year-old. He's scored two and had an assist, so he's playing with lots of confidence.

"The first strike is a brilliant goal. It's an outstanding finish and you didn't really doubt him.

"Today's a really good win. We were a bit sloppy in the first half, but we upped it in the second.

"They all played their part in a really good win, and it gives us another three points on the road, which can only be a good thing."

Gyökeres hits brace as Sky Blues demolish Terriers in 4-0 victory

Coventry City cut the gap to the Sky Bet Championship play-off positions to just three points with a 4-0 victory at relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts produced a spirited opening half-hour but handed City's first goal to them on a silver platter with defender Michal Helik passing directly to Sky Blues striker Viktor Gyökeres who clinically gave the visitors the lead with an acutely lobbed effort.

Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson produced an excellent low save to deny Town's Scott High soon after which ended up being Neil Warnock's side's best moment of the match with the visitors going up a gear in the second half.

Terriers shot stopper Nicholas Bilokapic won't want to watch back City's second goal as Gustavo Hamer bundled the ball under the Australian following a smart pass from Fankaty Dabo.

Just minutes later and poor defending saw Gyökeres one-on-one once again with the 24-year-old showing once again why Huddersfield boss Warnock labelled the Swede as the best striker in the Championship earlier this week.

When a hat-trick could've been registered, the forward showed the unselfish side of his game, squaring to substitute Tyler Walker who wrapped up the victory in the final minute of added time.

The victory sees the Sky Blues climb up to eighth in the Championship, three points behind sixth-placed Norwich City. Here's CoventryLive's player ratings after an excellent afternoon for Robins and his side.
