Late set-piece goal takes shine off creditable display at the league leaders
A late set-piece goal took the shine off an otherwise creditable Coventry City performance at Championship leaders Burnley.
The Sky Blues looked the better side for 60 minutes, after which the Clarets built a head of steam with some intense pressure which finally resulted in Jordan Beyer heading home from an 82nd minute corner to deny Mark Robins’ men what would have been a deserved point at Turf Moor.
City started off brightly enough with a lovely move down the right resulting in Viktor Gyokeres cutting into the box from the right and pulling the ball back for Jamie Allen to shoot, albeit fluffing his lines with a wayward effort that was blocked. Minutes later in the ninth, Gyokeres supplied Allen for a second time but the midfielder sent his shot inches wide of the keeper’s left-hand post.
Coventry were playing some lovely football and creating chances, with Allen being picked out again just after the half hour mark when Jake Bidwell sent in a lovely cross but he just lacked the height to get any direction on his header in the box.
A slick passage of play saw Ben Sheaf send Kasey Palmer running into the box where he showed quick feet to get a shot off as Ian Maatsen slid in with a last ditch block to deny him the lead, while Gus Hamer tested the keeper for the first time with a curling effort from the edge of the box as Coventry were by far the better side in an encouraging first half
Gyokeres raced onto a poor backpass at the start of the second half and cut across the face of goal past a defender and round the keeper before being denied by Josh Brownhill who tackled him just as he was about to shoot.
Manuel Benson then missed a glorious chance for the Clarets in their first real attempt at the City goal after a three man move involving Maatsen and Berg Gudmundsson opening the visitors up.
Burnley’s subs Berg Gudmundsson and Nathan Tella combined in the 65th minute with the latter getting a free header at goal and being denied by a decent reaction save from Ben Wilson as Vincent Kompany’s men piled on a sustained spell of pressure.
City held out until the 82nd minute when they were finally undone by a set-piece, with centre-back Jordan Beyer getting away from Dabo and running in at the near post and sending a glancing header past Wilson to score.
