Late drama as Gyokeres secures points from the spot

A late penalty from Viktor Gyokeres handed Coventry City a deserved victory over in-form West Bromwich Albion at the CBS Arena, lifting Mark Robins’ men up to eighth in the Championship and just a point off the play-offs.

Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer were both denied by the Baggies’ keeper while Jonathan Panzo headed onto the bar in an entertaining game in which the Sky Blues were well worth the full three points.

City started on the front foot with plenty of possession and decent build-up play in the final third, with Hamer hitting the post from a second minute corner before Callum O’Hare and Ben Sheaf both fired wide of the far post in sixth and eighth minutes.

Hamer sent a free-kick fizzing inches wide of the far post shortly after as the Baggies continued to soak up the home pressure with City’s high press working to good effect to win the ball, resulting in a chance for Gyokeres who shot wide.

Robins’ men, however, had Callum Doyle to thank in the 21st minute when City found themselves stretched at the back and the centre-back cleared off the line after Tom Rogic latched onto a loose ball and should really have scored.

Hamer sent a Gyokeres racing through on goal just after the half hour mark but the striker’s low and hard shot to the near post was blocked by goalkeeper Alex Palmer who put it out for a corner. The resulting flag kick fell straight to an Albion player to spark a blistering counter attack that saw Jed Wallace hit a shot straight at Ben Wilson in the City goal.

The outstanding Hamer almost broke the deadlock three minutes from the break when he hit a lovely shot from just outside the box, only to be denied by the keeper who tipped over the bar.

City continued in the second half where they left off in the first, playing on the front foot and looking to take the initiative with three corners in quick succession which resulted in Jonathan Panzo heading onto the crossbar.

Albion started coming into the game just after the hour mark when they enjoyed a string of set pieces which City weathered before getting back at the visitors, with Hamer being denied from distance when the keeper punched clear.

Gyokeres was then tripped in the box by Erik Pieters in the second minute of four for added time and stepped up to slot home a lovely winner.

Late Coventry penalty ends West Brom's winning run

Viktor Gyokeres' stoppage-time penalty sent Coventry City up to eighth in the Championship and ended West Bromwich Albion's five-game winning run.

Gyokeres, the division's leading scorer, was fouled in the box and sent Alex Palmer the wrong way from the spot for his 11th goal of the season.

Before then, the Sky Blues had come closest to a winner when Jonathan Panzo headed against the crossbar.

Victory took the home side to within one point of the play-off places.

Coventry had the better of a goalless first half, showing little sign of a hangover after surrendering a three-goal lead against Swansea on Saturday.

Callum O'Hare, Ben Sheaf and Gyokeres all shot wide during a positive opening spell, while Gustavo Hamer twice forced Baggies goalkeeper Palmer into good saves either side of half-time.

At the other end, Tom Rogic and Jed Wallace were denied by Callum Doyle's last-ditch clearance and Ben Wilson's save respectively. Wilson was also on hand to keep out Darnell Furlong's effort following a second-half goalmouth scramble.

Improving Albion looked on course for their fifth clean sheet in six Championship games before Gyokeres fell under the challenge of Erik Pieters at the end of a mazy run into the box, and the Swedish striker coolly converted the resulting spot-kick.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins told BBC CWR:

"The players were outstanding, but then they were outstanding on Saturday too until we let in three goals and drew a game that felt like a defeat.

"But we got back to keeping clean sheets - and we were unlucky not to score more against a side who've won five on the bounce.

"It's up there with one of our best performances of the season. People are getting excited and that's great, but expectations should not be going through the roof.

"We have a great bunch of players but we don't have the depth of squads other clubs have. That's not a complaint. It's just down to circumstances."
