Gyokeres brace as Sky Blues make it four on the spin
Two goals from Viktor Gyokeres gave Coventry City a fourth consecutive Championship win to send them into the World Cup break in fine spirits.
Callum O’Hare provided both assists for a goal in each half as the Sky Blues were well worth their victory over Queens Park Rangers at the CBS Arena.
Mark Robins’ men created the first chance of the game when they launched an exciting counter attack from a second minute QPR corner, with O’Hare launching the ball up field to send Viktor Gyokeres racing into the box. The striker cut in and squared a pass to Ben Sheaf whose shot was blocked and fell out to Josh Eccles who hit a wild effort disappointingly into the stand.
City kept up the pressure with another effort minutes later sparked by Gustavo Hamer but the end result saw the opposition keeper collet the ball after a tough from Gyokeres at the near post. But the striker gave City a deserved lead in the 11th minute when O’Hare turned full-back Ethan Laird and sent a cross into the area where the big Swede controlled it, turned his man and fired his shot into the top corner.
The closest QPR came to threatening City’s goal was in the 28th minute when an Ilias Chair free-kick was met by the head of centre-back Robert Dickie who sent it over the bar.
Coventry dominated the first half, playing some lovely short, one-touch football to create inroads in the final third and restricting the visitors to the occasional counter attack and set piece.
Michael Beale’s side applied some pressure late on in the first half and continued their fight-back after the break when they started to dominate the ball more, forcing the Sky Blues to defend deeper and deeper and play on the counter themselves with Kyle McFadzean and Hamer driving forward on exciting attacks to provide a bit of respite from the pressure.
Rangers didn’t have a single effort on target until the 75th minute when Dickie hit a blistering shot that looked to be heading for the top corner until Ben Wilson flung himself to his left and palmed it away for a corner.
City then gave themselves a two goal cushion minutes later in the 78th when O’Hare slipped him in behind in the box for a cool and precise finish. And the big Swede almost got a hat-trick in the 85th minute when he got on the end of a cross from Eccles and headed it goalwards, only for the keeper to tip over the bar at the last second.
