Missed chances and penalty pain as Sky Blues bow out at CBS Arena

Image

It was a case of deja vu at the CBS Arena as Coventry City passed up clear cut chances before being hit against the run of play in each half.

Martyn Waghorn, Callum O’Hare and Dom Hyam all had opportunities to give the Sky Blues the first half lead before Huddersfield’s Harry Toffolo curled in a sensational strike on the stroke of half time.

And despite a determined second half fightback, Ben Wilson conceded a penalty 11 minutes from time for Faustino Anjorin before Viktor Gyokeres pulled one back in the 90th minute to make for an exciting end to the game.

City started the game with plenty of confidence, knocking the ball about well in front of a large and expectant home crowd and enjoying plenty of possession against a buoyant Town side safe in the knowledge that they have secured their spot in the play-offs.

The visitors appeared happy to play a patient game of containment early on and only really troubled Coventry when the ball was given away to them.

The Sky Blues’ early endeavour almost paid dividends in the eighth minute when a flowing move resulted in Viktor Gyokeres setting the ball back for Martyn Waghorn in the box, only for the striker’s shot to be pushed out for a corner with a decent save from goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

City continued to keep up the pressure on the visitors with four corners in the first 16 minutes, the latter seeing Kyle McFadzean and Michael Rose accidentally collide in the box and go to ground hurt, with Rose coming off worst and receiving treatment for several minutes for a facial injury before carrying on.

Callum O’Hare passed up a glorious chance just after the half hour mark when he screwed a shot wide before a counter attack at the other end saw Jordan Rhodes get the better of McFadzean and Rose to hit an angled shot that was denied by a decent stop from Ben Wilson.

A well-worked free kick from Gus Hamer was lifted back across the box by Waghorn to Dom Hyam who attempted to lift it over the keeper, only for Nicholls to collect the ball into his grasp.

But the Terriers hit the home side with a sucker punch just before the break when wing-back Harry Toffolo cut in from the left and stuck the ball in the far top corner of the net, giving Wilson no chance with a wonder strike.

City started the second half as they had played for much of the first, with plenty of attacking intent, forcing an early corner and Hamer testing the keeper from distance. Robins’s men were pretty much camped in the opposition half, desperately trying to break down a well organised defence but still looked vulnerable to the counter attack, as they did in the 59th minute when Town cut their way through all too easily before feeding Rhodes in the box, only for the striker to slide in and send the ball wide.

Gyokeres and Waghorn combined just after the hour to set up O’Hare for a powerful snap shot that Nicholls spilled but then pounced on as the frustration continued.

Fabio Tavares and Josh Eccles replaced Waghorn and Kane for the last 20 minutes as Robins looked to find a way through but it was Huddersfield who almost doubled their lead when substitute Danny Ward raced clean through on goal, only for Wilson to make a terrific save with his foot. The keeper then pulled off another impressive save to deny Ward a second time, only for Lewis O’Brien to run onto the loose ball and Wilson dive at his feet. The midfielder went down and the referee showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot, allowing Faustino Anjorin to slot home Town’s second.

City then pulled a goal back with a lovely three-man move fed Gyokeres in the box to slam home his 17th of the season to set up another grandstand finish with three minutes of stoppage time. But despite their best efforts, Coventry couldn’t find an equaliser as the game ended 2-1 to Town.

Anjorin scores first Terriers goal in Coventry win

Faustino Anjorin scored his first Huddersfield Town goal to ensure the Terries sealed a top-four finish with victory at Coventry City.

The victory leaves the Terriers, who have just one match remaining, equal on points with Nottingham Forest in third and three points adrift of Bournemouth in second spot.

Huddersfield's improbable aspirations of automatic promotion now hinge on Forest beating second-placed Bournemouth on Tuesday, and both the Cherries and Reds losing heavily on the final day, while the Terriers would need to win big against Bristol City to overturn a large goal difference deficit.

Harry Toffolo's brilliant strike in the final minute of the first half put Huddersfield ahead at Coventry with just their second shot on goal.

Terriers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls made a series of fine saves against a Coventry side that had 22 shots, before victory was sealed from the penalty spot late on by 20-year-old Chelsea loanee Anjorin following Ben Wilson's foul on Lewis O'Brien.

Viktor Gyokeres eventually beat Nicholls in the final minute, but it proved too late for the Sky Blues who slip to 11th in the table.

Martyn Waghorn was first to be denied by Championship goalkeeper of the season Nicholls in the eighth minute.

After Sky Blues keeper Wilson kept Jordan Rhodes out, Dominic Hyam and Jamie Allen were both foiled by the excellent Nicholls before Toffolo broke the deadlock.

Gustavo Hamer and Callum O'Hare had efforts saved by Nicholls early in the second half, while Anjorin played Danny Ward in for a big chance at the other end which Wilson was equal to.

Anjorin took his chance to make it 2-0 from the spot, before Gyokeres salvaged a goal for the hard-working Sky Blues.
