Godden levels as Coventry draw at Huddersfield

Image

Coventry City came from behind again to earn their fourth draw in five games as Matt Godden's injury-time header rescued a point for the late-goal specialists at Huddersfield.

Former Sky Blues loan man Danny Ward's well-struck left-foot 20-yard shot in the first half looked like it would prove the only goal.

But, in the 93rd minute, fit-again Jodi Jones, making only his sixth substitute appearance after two almost totally lost seasons through injury, cut back in down the right to curl over a wicked left-foot cross - and Godden's deft glance was enough.

It was rough luck on home keeper Lee Nicholls who had made a string of fine saves to keep the Sky Blues at bay, but it turned out all right in the end for visiting boss Mark Robins on his return to one of his former clubs.

A point each for seventh-placed Coventry and Huddersfield, who climbed two places from 11th to ninth, still leaves both sides with only one win now in seven games.

But, despite taking until injury time to find the net, Coventry had cause to be the more disappointed, having been the better of the two sides as they responded well to last weekend's mentally bruising home defeat by West Bromwich Albion.

Carlos Corberan's Terriers were ahead when a well-worked cross-field move ended with Harry Toffolo squaring a low left-foot cross on 18 minutes and Ward, left unattended, latched on to it to pick out the bottom-left corner.

Coventry playmaker Callum O'Hare was then twice denied an equaliser by Nicholls, first with a disappointing chip then when he got on the end of Todd Kane's low right-wing cross.

Duane Holmes was close to adding a second when his shot across goal was diverted on to the post by City keeper Simon Moore's fingertips but then Jamie Allen hit the woodwork at the other end.

Dom Hyam and Michael Rose both went close for Coventry with headers either side of Matty Pearson heading badly wide for Huddersfield at the other end when he could have put the game to bed.

But there was one more aerial attempt on goal to come, Godden took his chance superbly - and his eighth goal of the season was a great tonic to take into next Saturday's home derby with Stoke City.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins:

"We had 22 shots on goal, over 65 per cent possession and enough chances to win this game, next week's game and the one after that. We played really well.

"They had two chances. And I did feel a goal for us might not come. We have good goalscorers but chances were falling to players low on confidence and that's our problem.

"We were good value for at least a point and we are disappointed to not take all three. And Callum O'Hare and Jamie Allen were really good."

Godden scores as Sky Blues leave it late again

Coventry City once again needed to dig deep to get a result as they drew 1-1 with Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The tempo was frantic and furious throughout the 90 minutes as the Sky Blues battered the host's door but it didn't come down until very late on for Mark Robins' men.

Carlos Corberan's charges scored against the run of play early on with Danny Ward punishing his former side with an excellent finish.

City had chance after chance after chance, but some insipid finishing and top goalkeeping kept them at bay for the majority of the game.

That was until super sub Jodi Jones found Matty Godden with a cross in injury time to salvage a valuable point with their sixth goal after the 90th minute of the season.

Two minutes in Jamie Allen drove forward for the first attack of the game, finding Todd Kane on the right side of the box. It came to nothing, but a sign of how City intended on attacking the hosts.

Less than a minute later Kane received the ball right by the sideline, crossing in to Matty Godden, who leapt in the air to get the first shot of the game with his head, but it was easily saved.

Coventry were on the attack again moments later, working it around the edge of the box before cutting it back to Ben Sheaf, who shot wide from 20 yards.

The visitors were slicker in the early goings, but Town were nearly in for a clear shot on goal in the seventh minute, as Ward received the ball on the edge of the box, but his first touch let him down and Dabo was there to clean up.

It was all Coventry in the opening quarter as Liam Kelly shot from 25 yards, but it was straight down the throat of the goalkeeper.

Yet again Kane was sought out on the right flank, found by Michael Rose with a sumptuous pass through the air from his own half, but instead of crossing it in he went for a diagonal shot himself, forcing a good save from Lee Nicholls.

It was Town who scored the first goal of the game, however. A patient move saw Harry Toffolo find Ward just outside the area and his first-time finish was excellently slotted into the corner of the net with their first shot of the game.

Coventry bit back immediately, with Callum O'Hare dispossessing Scott High following a misguided pass from Nicholls, but his decision-making let him down as he attempted to chip the keeper when he may have been better served hitting a low drive.

Seconds later City won it high again, this time through Godden, whose subsequent effort was straight at Nicholls, but the contest was now at a mile a minute.

That diagonal ball to Kane stretched Huddersfield yet again in the 30th minute, with the winger dragging it back to O'hare seven yards out from goal, but Nicholls saved well with his foot, City's best chance of the game at that point.

Town, who have excelled at set pieces this season, could have doubled their lead from a corner in the 35th minute as they put everyone at the back post. The ball swung ominously across the box like a game of pinball, but City eventually won a free out as the danger dissipated.

Kelly won a foul got the game's first booking in the same breath after some handbags with Duane Holmes. The attacker wrapped himself around the City captain's ankles to take him down, to which Kelly retaliated and both men were shown yellows.

Coventry came out early from the interval looking to make amends for their profligate opening 45 minutes and add to the 14 points they had won from losing positions before Saturday.

It as Town who came out swinging, though, as Holmes received the ball in the box before Simon Moore tipped his shot onto the post. Sorba Thomas received the ball on the right from the resulting corner, but his looping cross went untouched.

City regained their composure soon after, as Allen got a shot off from the edge of the box, but it too hit the outside of the post.

Disaster almost struck then as Josh Koroma's lovely outside-of-the-boot cross was punched by Moore, only to ricochet off Kyle McFadzean's head. Luckily for the centre-back the ball went wide and he avoided scoring a second own goal in two weeks.

The pace of the game refused to slow down as Coventry continued to pepper the home side's goal. Kane's cross from a free found Dom Hyam, whose header was tipped over the bar by Nicholls with an hour on the clock.

Mark Robins then made a double substitution in a bid to get a goal back, with Ben Sheaf and Fankaty Dabo making way for Tyler Walker and Ian Maatsen.

By this point City's eight shots on target were, remarkably, more than they have taken in any single game this season, yet were being left frustrated in front of goal.

Huddersfield nearly scored again, though, as Matty Pearson was allowed a free header in the six yard box, but somehow sent his effort a good metre wide of the goal.

It was a huge let off, but Coventry kept piling on pressure. Rose had an opportunity from a corner, but his header was tipped over the bar. Hyam once again had a good chance, but headed the ball wide.

Jodi Jones replaced O'Hare with ten minutes remaining, and had a pop from just outside the box but once more Nicholls was equal to it. The City players were, presumably, sick at the sight of the shot stopper, who was in inspired form.

As the game ticked into injury time with hope fading, Jones sent a perfect cross into the box, which Godden turned into the far corner to spark manic celebrations.

Coventry went for the winner, with Godden getting another chance to claim all the glory, but ultimately missed.
