Godden stars but magnificent seven evades Sky Blues

Image

Coventry City’s unbeaten home run continued but they were denied a magnificent seventh win out of seven by a late Derby equaliser.

The Sky Blues were on course for the full three points after Matty Godden had given them a deserved first half lead from the penalty spot.

But the visitors grew in confidence after the break as City’s energy faded, and Graeme Shinnie pulled his side level 12 minutes from time to spoil the party.

City made a positive start to the game with plenty of high pressing and intricate play just outside the Derby box as they looked for an early advantage against their cautious looking opponents who were happy to sit and soak up the pressure.

The atmosphere was brilliant from the first whistle with over 20,000 of a bumper 23,829 CBS Arena crowd getting right behind their team and urging them on every step of the way.

Although the Sky Blues enjoyed 67 per cent of the early possession, they struggled to break down a well organised Rams side content to play a waiting game on the counter attack.

But Coventry’s own patience paid dividends on 19 minutes when some quick first touch passing, sparked by Ben Sheaf, resulted in Godden darting into the area and being taken down by left-back Lee Buchanan.

Referee Dean Whitestone pointed straight to the spot and the returning striker calmly slotted his penalty straight down the middle as the keeper Kelle Roos dived to his right to give the home side a deserved lead.

Godden then went agonisingly close to doubling the lead as City looked take advantage of their momentum, again working the ball into the box where the striker’s left footed effort was pushed wide for a corner by Roos.

The striker then got on the end of City’s fourth corner but his flicked header nestled on the roof of the net as City pushed for a second before the break.

The Rams hit their first effort o goal from a deflected shot in first half stoppage time – the first time Simon Moore had been called upon to make a save.

Derby huffed and puffed as they tried to spark a second half fight-back but Coventry continued to push for the all important next goal.

City, however, worryingly started to sit deeper on the hour as the visitors began to have more possession as Robins’ men defended their slender lead.

The manager freshened things up by adding Tyler Walker for a tired looking Gyokeres up front and replacing Sheaf with the experienced Liam Kelly to help manage the game.

The Sky Blues rode their luck in the 69th minute when substitute Colin Kazim-Richards got the better of Kyle McFadzean in the air from a long ball up to the penalty box and hit a shot that beat the keeper but bounced off the inside of the post before being scrambled clear.

Coventry then had a goal disallowed when a thunderous Gus Hamer free-kick rattled the crossbar and Godden followed up with a header that found the back of the net but was ruled out for off-side.

Derby, however, continued to plug away and got their rewards 12 minutes from time when a pull-back to the unmarked Greame Shinnie left Moore exposed and the midfielder fired home the equaliser.

City pushed for a winner into three minutes of added time, Ian Maatsen slashing over the bar from a Fankaty Dabo cross.

But they had to settle for a point in the end as their 100 per cent winning record came to an end.

Coventry winning run ended by Derby

Graeme Shinnie's late equaliser for Derby County ended Coventry City's 100% winning start at home in the Championship this season.

The Sky Blues dominated the first half and went in at the break in front after Matt Godden's penalty.

But Derby improved in the second half and hit the post through Colin Kazim-Richards, before Gustavo Hamer hit the bar at the other end.

The Rams got a point when Shinnie brought down a loose ball inside the box and lashed home.

It sent the 3,482 Derby fans home with smiles on their faces as their side extended their unbeaten run to five matches.

Coventry got off to a good start when Lee Buchanan brought down Godden, who dusted himself off and scored from the spot.

Godden was denied a second by Derby keeper Kelle Roos and he also nodded a corner into the side netting.

Derby brought on Kazim-Richards just after the hour mark and he had an almost immediate impact, shooting against the post.

At the other end, Hamer's 35-yard free-kick then hit the bar with Godden heading in the rebound but from an offside position.

Derby's resilience paid off when Shinnie struck to earn the Rams a fourth draw in a row.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"I've got to be happy with a point, after the week we've had. Derby are floating under the radar because of their off-field problems, but they're a really good team who ask questions of you.

"They sat a little bit deeper than they would normally do and just stayed in the game. They had the extra day's rest and that tells in the last 20 minutes.

"In the first half, we were in full control and really should have put the game to bed. We had enough of the ball but didn't create a great deal. There was a lack of quality at times."

Fans involved in trouble at Coventry City v Derby County match face lifetime bans from football

Image

Four police officers were injured as trouble flared between Coventry City and Derby County fans both inside and outside the stadium at yesterday's game.

There was fighting in the stands during Saturday's Championship tie at the Coventry Building Society Arena, which saw one man arrested, before violence flared outside the stadium which left the officers injured.

One of the officers suffered a dislocated shoulder.

One arrest was made and Brandon Mall, 23, of Dartmouth Road, Wyken, has since been charged with affray and is due to appear at Coventry Magistrates' Court tomorrow (Monday).

And West Midland Police has warned that anyone involved in the disturbances face a lifetime ban from football matches.

The trouble began in the second half of Saturday's game, which ended 1-1, as fans and police clashed in the stands.

As supporters left following the final whistle, further disorder took place outside, which officers brought under control and the crowd was dispersed.

Reports on social media after the game said that there was also trouble at the nearby Cherry Tree pub.

An investigation into the incident by both the police and Coventry City Football Club is underway.

Coventry City fan accused of kicking Derby County fan in 'unprovoked violence'

A Coventry City fan is accused of running in to the away end and kicking a rival fan during trouble at Saturday's game against Derby County.

Brandon Mall, 23, has been charged with affray after fans clashed inside the Coventry Building Society Arena, before violence also continued outside the stadium in which police officers were injured.

Mall, of Dartmouth Road, Wyken, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday) where it was stated he's accused of affray in that he used or threatened violence towards another person and made them fear for their personal safety.

Prosecutor Baldev Atwal alleged that Mall "breached a sterile area between the fans" and carried out "unprovoked and sustained violence towards a fellow spectator".

He didn't indicate a plea and will now appear at Warwick Crown Court on November 22.

He was granted bail until that date with conditions that he does not attend any Coventry City games - home or away - or enter a mapped area of Coventry within three hours before a home game, during the game and three hours afterwards. He must also not enter Coventry city centre - as defined by the Ring Road - on the day of a home game.

Mall is also banned from entering any town or city where the Sky Blues are playing an away fixture three hours before, during and three hours after the game, and entering any city where England, Scotland or Wales are playing a fixture on that date.
