The Sky Blues had to settle for a point at mid-table Millwall in a hugely competitive game at The DenViktor Gyokeres fired home his fifth goal of the season to give Coventry City the lead at Millwall but it wasn’t enough to secure the full three points in a highly competitive draw at The Den.
The in-form striker gave the Sky Blues a tenth minute lead but poor defending and a wicked deflection let the Lions back in on 21 minutes in a finely balance Championship contest with chances at both ends.
Millwall showed plenty of early attacking intent with Tom Bradshaw giving Dom Hyam the slip, only for Kyle McFadzean to come the rescue with a brilliant sliding block in the box.
But man of the moment Gyokeres gave City the early lead with his third goal in three games, and fifth in eight, with a lovely finish across Bartosz Bialkowski.
The move started with a Hyan driving forward into the final third and squaring a pass to the big striker who pulled wide of his marker in the box and picked his spot.
The visitors looked really good on the attack, brimming with confidence but the Lions soon got back on level terms when a break down the right resulted in a low cross to the box where George Saville hit a shot that took a deflection off Todd Kane to wrong foot keeper Simon Moore.
It was a poor goal to concede with City’s defence pulled all over the place and Millwall continued to cause problems down the right where City’s defenders were guilty of not getting close enough to cut out the supply line to the strikers.
The game was fairly even to the break with Kane and Gyokeres firing wide before Tom Bradshaw sent a diving header past Moore, only for Coventry to be saved by the off-side flag.
Gyokeres was played through beautifully by Callum O’Hare in first half stoppage time, only to be denied by the keeper at his near post.
City started the second half well with Kane slipping a lovely ball to Matty Godden, only for the striker’s low shot to be blocked by the keeper.
Moore pulled off another good save to deny Bradshaw at the other end before a brilliant counter attack saw Gyokeres racing into the box where his shot was blocked at the last second in a game that hung in the balance and could have gone either way.
Both sides kept plugging away in search of a winning goal with City gaining a nice bit of momentum midway through the second period with some decent approach play just lacking that final bit of quality to find the back of the net.
Robins made late changes with Jamie Allen and Tyler Walker going on for O’Hare and Godden for the last nine minutes of an increasingly frantic affair.
But both sides had to settle for a point in the end, which ended a decent week for the Sky Blues.
