Waghorn seals Coventry win over Boro

Coventry City kept up their 100% winning start at home with victory over Middlesbrough at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Viktor Gyokeres grabbed his third of the season in the 71st minute as he rounded goalkeeper Joe Lumley to put them in front.

Debutant Andraz Sporar was close to an equaliser for Boro when he hit the bar before Martyn Waghorn sealed the points in injury time.

Coventry climb up to sixth, while it is now four games without a win for the visitors.

Their manager Neil Warnock had brought in three players just before the transfer window closed but only Onel Hernandez was in from the start. The Cuban, on his debut on loan from Norwich, almost set up Uche Ikpeazu but the ball flashed across goal.

Coventry could have gone ahead but Waghorn was denied by Joe Lumley, while Jamie Allen and Dom Hyam were both close to breaking the deadlock in the first period.

But home goalkeeper Simon Moore was on hand to make a crucial save from Ikpeazu at the start of the second half.

Mark Robins' side had to come from behind to win in injury time in their previous two home games, but not this time as Sweden striker Gyokeres latched on to Allen's pass.

Slovenia international Sporar, who has moved to the Riverside on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon, had replaced Hernandez and beat Moore with a header but not the crossbar as he tried to make an instant impact.

However, Waghorn then scored his first goal for Coventry - and for his eighth different club in the Championship - as they keep up their perfect start on returning to the city after two seasons away.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins told BBC CWR:

"I'm delighted for Martyn [Waghorn] because he has worked so hard to get any opportunity. He beats himself up and he shouldn't because he's concentrated on his performance and then goals come.

"To a man everyone deserves an enormous amount of credit, and the fans were again terrific, so a good day at the office. If the players work as hard as that, they will get more results than not. This was full of character, full of quality and thoroughly deserved."

Gyokeres and Waghorn on the mark as Moore brilliant

Second half goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Martyn Waghorn gave Coventry City to their third Championship win on the spin at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Swedish striker displayed a cool head to round the Middlesbrough goalkeeper midway through the second half of another entertaining and hugely encouraging encounter on home soil.

And Waghorn got his first goal for the club at the death to secure another brilliant victory for Mark Robins's men.

City started with plenty of attacking intent and possession, taking the game to the visitors who appeared content to soak up the early pressure and play on the counter.

A decent move saw Jamie Allen played in down the right and send in an early cross that Martyn Waghorn got a boot to but couldn’t get it on target.

But Coventry looked vulnerable at the other end a minute later when Onel Hernandez got to the byline and sent the ball across the face of the six-yard box where none of his teammates were in support for what would have been a simple tap-in.

But the outstanding Simon Moore was called upon for the first time in the 16th minute when Marcus Tavernier pulled the trigger from distance, his shot taking a deflection but the goalkeeper adjusting his stance to get a firm hand and make the save.

Waghorn was then denied at the near post after some excellent work from Fankaty Dabo before Jamie Allen had an effort cleared in the six-yard box as City recycled the ball, resulting in a corner, from which Dom Hyam headed into the side netting.

That sparked Mark Robins’s men into a decent spell to the break where they were comfortably on top, albeit struggling to find clear cut opportunities to score.

Neil Warnock’s men upped their game in the second half when they were denied by a brilliant triple save from Moore who first dived to deny Uche Ikpeazu before scrambling to his feet to block Isaiah Jones and Onel Hernandez on the follow-up at the back post.

The City stopper was in action again just before the hour when he punched clear another Ikpeazu effort to keep City in the game.

Callum O’Hare burst into the box and went to ground under pressure from two defenders but his appeals for a penalty were waved away as the game became a frantic end to end affair around the 65 minute mark.

But City finally got the goal their efforts deserved when Jamie Allen played a lovely through ball for Gyokeres who displayed great strength to shrug off Anfernee Dijksteel before rounding keeper Joe Lumley and slotting home between two covering defenders on the line.

Gus Hamer had a 20-yard free-kick tipped over after O’Hare had been tripped on his way into the box, City again denied a penalty before Boro hit the bar at the other end.

Michael Rose was thrown on to add fresh legs at the back and City looked to manage their way to the final whistle, with Todd Kane replacing Ian Maatsen for the last eight minutes as the new signing was handed his debut.

But City weren't finished there and secured the points when Dabo and Gyokeres combined to play Waghorn through on the right in the box, with the striker showing strength against his marker before beating the keeper at his near post.
