Cobblers knock Coventry out of EFL Cup

Teenager Kion Etete scored twice on his first senior start as League Two Northampton came from behind to knock Coventry City out of the Carabao Cup.

Tyler Walker converted Jamie Allen's pass to give the Championship side an early lead, but the Cobblers fought back and Etete levelled just after half-time.

The 19-year-old, on a season-long loan from Tottenham, then grabbed the winner with his second of the night.

Town goalkeeper Jon Maxted denied Julien Dacosta an equaliser late on as Coventry crashed out.

The Sky Blues dominated the early stages of the tie and went ahead when Jordan Shipley's deflected cross fell to Allen, who set up Walker for a close-range finish.

Northampton should have drawn level soon afterwards, with Scott Pollock twice denied by Ben Wilson and Danny Rose's effort rattling the post before Etete also went close with a glancing header.

But the Cobblers' equaliser arrived seven minutes after the restart, when the young forward stole possession from Declan Drysdale and ran on to slam a clinical half-volley past Wilson.

Dacosta, the only survivor from Coventry's starting line-up at the weekend, almost restored their lead with a curling attempt that tested Maxted.

But Etete netted the winner for the Northampton, pouncing on Fraser Horsfall's flick-on and making enough contact to force the ball over the line.

Walker off the mark but Sky Blues crash out of cup

Coventry City crashed out of the first round of the Carabao Cup at the hands of League Two Northampton Town.

Despite taking an early lead from Tyler Walker, the Sky Blues wasted a gilt-edged chance to double their lead two minutes later and lived to rue their miss when a gutsy Cobblers side battled back with a determined remainder of the first half.

And the visitors got their rewards with an equaliser early in the second half from Tottenham Hotspur loan player Kion Etete, the 19-year-old going on to punish poor defending to bag the winner with 20 minutes to go.

Robins made ten changes to his side as he handed senior competitive debuts to 17-year-old midfielder Ryan Howley, 19-year-old left-back Josh Reid and Bright Enobakhare on his return to the club.

There was also a personal milestone for Jodi Jones who started his first senior game since November 2018 on a night when the Cobblers also made widespread changes, with eight new faces in the starting line-up from the weekend’s 1-0 league win over Port Vale.

Switching systems, City started with a back four in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Howley sat in front of the defence and Enobakhare and Jones deployed wide on the left and right, respectively.

Coventry dominated the first 15 minutes, displaying excellent movement in midfield and attacking at pace. And they got the goal their endeavour deserved as early as the 13th minute when Jordan Shipley sent a cross into the six yard box where it came off Jamie Allen and fell loose to Tyler Walker for an easy finish from close range.

City should really have doubled their lead two minutes later when Jamie Allen threaded a lovely ball into the box for Shipley but, with just the keeper to beat, somehow hit his shot over the bar from just seven yards out.

Town suddenly sparked into life with some determined play of their own and should really have been level when City failed to clear, leaving Danny Rose all the goal to aim at but thumping the outside of Ben Wilson’s right-hand post, the keeper having got down low to deny Scott Pollock minutes before.

Teenage Tottenham loan man Kion Etete then had his head in his hands when poor defending from Coventry resulted in the ball falling loose to the Cobblers’ forward who just had to pick his spot but somehow managed to skew his effort which took a deflection and flew wide across the face of goal.

Despite such a bright and dominant start, Robins’s men faded as the half went on with the visitors going in at the break unlucky not to be on level terms.

The Cobblers started the second half as they’d finished the first with more determined forward play and got the goal they deserved when a ball over the top evaded Declan Drysdale and fell to Etete who hit a sweet half volley past Wilson to give his side a 51st minute equaliser.

Julien Dacosta cut in onto his leg peg and hit a lovely curling shot that was tipped over the bar by Jon Maxted as City almost restored their lead just before the hour.

Robins then made three changes, sending on Martyn Waghorn, Josh Pask and Ian Maatsen for the tiring Enobakhare, Rose and youngster Howley as City looked to avoid a penalty shootout.

The visitors, however, had different ideas and capitalised on dreadful defending to take a 70th minute lead when Spurs’ loan man Etete poked home from close range after Coventry dithered in the box with a number of players failing to clear a flicked on long throw into the six yard box.
