Chances missed and worrying injuriesCoventry City had to settle for a point in a frustrating and ultimately disappointing game against bottom of the league Wycombe Wanderers.
The Sky Blues should really have been two or three goals ahead after a dominant first half when Max Biamou and Gus Hamer missed glorious chances.
Mark Robins’s men continued to boss the second half but couldn’t find a way through the visitors on a costly afternoon when they lost both Fankaty Dabo and captain Liam Kelly to injuries, on a day when relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham both won away from home.
City started brightly and could have been a goal ahead with barely a minute on the clock after a lovely move down the right, Matty James playing a delightful one/two with Fankaty Dabo who played a square pass to Gus Hamer for a free shot at goal, only for his effort to go wide of the left hand post.
Former City loan keeper David Stockdale then came to the rescue in the fifth minute when Max Biamou cut out an Anthony Steward clearance and raced through on goal, only to see his low effort blocked by the experienced stopper.
Sam McCallum then turned provider on 22 minutes, sending Biamou through to the left of goal where the striker volleyed the bouncing ball wide as another decent chance went begging for the Sky Blues.
Wanderers troubled threatened for the first time just before the half hour mark when a deep free-kick dropped into the danger area where centre-back Anthony Stewart was denied by a brilliant block from Michael Rose.
Biamou played a clever back-heel to send O’Hare in behind to the right of goal but his teasing centre looking for Hamer was cut out by a defender as Coventry continued to dominate the opening half.
City suffered a blow when Dabo pulled up with what looked like a hamstring strain five minutes before the break, having to go off and replaced by Julien Dacosta.
Wycombe didn’t have a single attempt on target in the first hour but the big and physical side got right in the faces of the Sky Blues as they continued tom frustrate the home side who became increasingly desperate as the second half ticked on.
City suffered another injury setback just after the hour when Kelly went down, requiring treatment and going off, replaced by striker Tyler Walker as Robins dropped Hamer back to fill in for the skipper and went with two up top.
Josh Pask was also thrown on, replacing the excellent Rose who was playing his first game back from a groin strain.
Matty Godden went on for the last eight minutes as time ran out for Coventry on a hugely frustrating afternoon that saw Matty James shoot wide late on in a game that will be seen as a missed opportunity.
