The Sky Blues recorded a superb 2-0 victory over second from bottom Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrew'sViktor Gyokeres opened his account to set Coventry City on their way to a hard-fought victory in a big six pointer against second from bottom Sheffield Wednesday.
The Brighton loan striker scored midway through the second half after being played in by Callum O’Hare.
The lively midfielder then turned provider for a second time in the 90th minute, slipping in substitute Jamie Allen on the right to slot home between Keiren Westwood's legs as the Sky Blues secured their seventh Championship win.
City made another positive start with Matty James hitting the first shot at goal inside the opening minute, his hard and low effort blocked by a defender.
The game was played at a furious pace early on as both sides looked to impose themselves and gain the advantage, with the home side enjoying more possession and forcing Wednesday to play on the counter attack.
But the Owls threatened with three set pieces in quick succession, going close when a corner was played back to Matt Penny in space outside the box, from where the full-back hit a powerful effort that took a deflection on its way towards the goal where Ben Wilson dropped to his left to push it wide for a second flag kick.
City enjoyed two corners in quick succession themselves just short of the half hour mark when Leo Ostigard got up well to get his head on the end of a Gus Hamer delivery, only to be denied by a decent save from former Sky Blues stopper Keiren Westwood.
Chances were few and far between as the opening half turned into a tight and scrappy affair to the break with neither side looking like breaking the deadlock.
Coventry suffered a blow at the break when stand-in skipper Fankaty Dabo failed to emerge for the second half, having taken a heavy knock before the interval when he required treatment.
Josh Pask replaced him in a rare game for the defender and settled into the game quickly as City started the second half as they had the first, with some lively attacking play.
But one opportunity fell disappointingly flat when Gyokeres failed to put his left foot through the ball after Callum O’Hare had created an opening for him wide of the Wednesday goal.
But the on-loan Brighton striker made no mistake in the 57th minute when he was played through on goal after some brilliant play from O’Hare who slipped an exquisite defence splitting ball to play him in.
There was some intricate passing in the middle of the park between Hamer and James in the build-up before the former slipped the ball to O’Hare who squeezed past two players before playing his killer pass to the striker, who slid home from about 16 yards out to beat the advancing Westwood and give City the lead.
The goal sparked the game into life with Wednesday immediately getting on the front foot in search of an equaliser, while Robins responded by throwing on the more forward thinking midfielder Jordan Shipley in place of the holding Ben Sheaf.
Hamer almost scored straight from a 73rd minute corner when he hit it hard and low to the near post and somehow Westwood managed to keep it out with the Coventry players claiming it had gone over the line.
But City maintained their pressure and got their rewards when substitute Allen secured the full three points with a late finish from another outstanding O'Hare pass.
